Hocus Pocus Filming Locations in Salem, MA

With Halloween just around the corner, and Hocus Pocus 2 coming out today, how can you not get excited about the fall Starbucks drinks, candy, Target fall decor, and all the halloween movies to get you in the spirit. A tradition of ours since we have been married is to inhale a whole package of orange cream filled Oreo cookies, a tall cold glass of milk (for dunking of course), all while snuggling up as we watch Hocus Pocus for the millionth time.

So when we took a trip to New England there was no way we were missing out on the filming locations for Hocus Pocus. In Salem, MA there are seven total filming spots. Relatively they are all within walking distance with the exception of two. Below I added a video we made that shows all the locations we visited on our trip.

Location #1: Max & Dani's House (4 Ocean Ave. Salem, MA) - this is a residential house so please be respectful if you do visit. When Michael and I visited back in 2018 the owner of the house had a table outside with all kinds of props, such as capes, witches hats, brooms, spell books, vacuums...if you know, you know...and the coolest one was the actual leather jacket that the cop was wearing in the movie. The lady was so nice and welcomed anyone to take pictures. Unfortunately, I think it has changed owners because in 2021 there was no longer a prop table outside.

Location #2: Allison's House aka The Ropes Mansion (318 Essex St. Salem, MA) - This is where the Halloween party for “rich people” was held and where the infamous, “What do you call them Max? Yabbos?” line took place! The Ropes Mansion is Salem's first historic house museum. It has a beautiful botanical garden in the back that is open 365 days a year, open from dawn to dusk, and at no charge. Definitely worth a look!

Location #3: Old Town Hall (32 Derby Sq. Salem, MA) - Remember the adult halloween costume party that the Sanderson sisters showed up to and Winifred Sanderson put on a killer performance of “I Put A Spell On You”? Well that was at Salem's town hall. It now serves as a museum for all things Salem witchcraft.

Location #4: Salem Commons (30 Washington Sq. Salem, MA) - This location isn't anything to special but it is the location Allison pulled a savage move and handed Max his note back with his phone number on it.

Location #5: Old Burial Hill Cemetery (Orne Street, Marblehead, MA) - Right after Max gets rejected by Allison, this is where he meets his two favorite bullies Jay and ICE. This encounter left him giving up his cross trainers and pedaling home shoeless. Not the best day for Max. This cemetery is rich with history that dates back to the 1638.

Location #6: Thackery Binx's House aka Pioneer Village (98 West Ave, Salem, MA) - This was one of our favorite spots while visiting the filming locations. This museum was built in the 1930’s, and recreates life in the puritan years. PLEASE NOTE: Pioneer Village is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm-4pm and cost $5 per person. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate.

Location #7: Max & Allison's High School aka Phillips Elementary School (86 Essex St, Salem, MA) - This school ended its run as a functioning school in 1992. Shortly after that, location scouts for the movie though this would make the perfect location for a Salem high school. The building now serves as a condominium complex overlooking the Salem Common.

If you plan to see all these locations, our recommendation would be to start at Max & Allison's High School. Salem Commons is right beside it so you can knock out two birds with one stone. Next, go to Old Town Hall. From there make your way to Allison's house. If you are up for a walk it will take you about 30 mins to walk to Max & Dani's house or it is about a short 6 mins drive. 4 mins down the road will be Thackery Binx's House at Pioneer Village. Lastly is Old Burial Hill. You will definitely need to drive there but it is only an 11 min drive. Hopefully this helps you on your Hocus Pocus tour. Most importantly...DO NOT light any black flame candles!
